Are You A Candidate For Dental Implants?

One of the first questions we get from most patients considering tooth replacement treatment is what sort of characteristics make a good candidate for the dental implants placement procedure. This page is intended to provide some of the traits that are usually found in successful dental implant candidates, as well as which characteristics may require additional time or procedures to prepare for dental implant placement.

Common Traits Of Successful Dental Implant Candidates

1) You are missing one or more teeth. A whole row of teeth can also be replaced.

2) You have healthy gums and jaw tissue. Healthy tissue better allows the implant to heal properly and stay firmly attached to the jawbone after the placement procedure.

3) You have good overall health. This ensures fewer problems after the placement procedure.

4) You have good oral hygiene habits or are willing to start. A clean and healthy mouth ensures better healing and fewer complications after the surgery.

5) You are willing and able to follow doctor’s instructions after surgery, as well as to commit the necessary 3 – 6 months to the procedure.

Candidates Who May Not Qualify For Dental Implants

1) Women who are pregnant. These patients are not preferred because dental implant placement involves surgery and it is recommended that women who are pregnant avoid invasive surgery, as well as anesthesia.

2) Uncontrolled tooth grinders. These patients could end up displacing the dental implant, or at the very least damaging the critical growth that occurs when patients avoid putting any pressure on the implant site.

3) Children who have undeveloped bone growth in the jaw. These patients are less preferred because continued growth of the jaw could displace the implant root.

4) Patients with serious underlying health conditions or those who are undergoing cancer treatment. These patients are not preferred because they could have trouble healing after the procedure during the important healing phase.

5) Smokers. These patients are generally less preferred because of problems with healing and bone growth.

6) Patients with uncontrolled gum disease. These patients will need to get their gum disease well under control before having oral surgery.

What If I Am Not A Good Candidate?

The most important thing you can do to help yourself is to become as healthy as possible prior to any surgical procedures. Supplemental procedures may be needed to improve inadequate bone and tissue in the mouth and jaw areas. Quitting smoking is also helpful. Please feel free to contact our helpful office staff to discuss how you can be better prepared for dental implants. For more information on supplemental procedures, please see our Supplemental Treatments page.

“A wonderful place to get all of your dental needs met. I could not be more pleased with the care I received from Dr. Monica. She is the best! Thanks again guys!”

Anne

“Best dentist I’ve been to by far. Both of them do such a great job, and somehow make the needles painless (as opposed to other dentists I’ve been to). Both of them are great, and I always leave happy. Thank you for taking care of my teeth!”

Macaela

“I have been going to Mavis Dental for the last 7 years. My family lives close to the office and when I moved back to the area I was looking for a new dentist. Originally I had visited another dentist up the street, but I had a very negative experience there taking out my wisdom teeth.

I booked an appointment to see Dr. Monica (Amanika Luciani) for a consult. Since my family had been going there for years, I had decided to give them a try. The first dentist that I went to in the area for my wisdom removal had outsourced a “travelling specialist” who performed the extraction. The result was my gums being hacked up and the extraction not complete. Dr. Monica, after our initial consult corrected all the mistakes that the “specialist” had done. After the procedures for correction were complete, my wife and I had moved our business to Dr. Monica.

Over the years my wife and I have had emergencies and issues which needed immediate attention. I have had no issues being able to see Dr. Monica or Dr. Mike either that day or the next day. I appreciate that they take the time with you to tell you the issues or options for your dental health. This professionalism and courteous nature also translates to the dental hygienists and support staff at the office. The hygienists are friendly and thorough with their examination/cleaning. The front desk staff are great as well!! Understanding the daily grind of most people, they will try to schedule an appointment that fits your life, not theirs. If you have an issue with your teeth or dental health and are in the Mississauga area, don’t have any hesitation to visit them…5 stars!”

Ryan

“I’m so very happy with my treatment and quick and friendly repair to my smile tonight! Thank you so much, Dr. Mike. The place is so beautiful and I felt so welcome. See you again soon!”
